Summer. That means vacations. You should be happy for those in your office that run away for a breather on the beach or take off for a European adventure, yet somehow you know it’ll bring problems. So, how to cope when your employees or co-workers take off to Disneyworld? Well, why not compare this coping process with the well-known stages of loss...
Denial
We refuse to believe something has happened. Maybe even send emails to the missing person, not thinking twice. Life is as it was before.
Anxiety
Panic hits. “That’s why they didn’t call back — vacation! What are we going to do?”
Anger
Anger can manifest itself in many ways. You may be tempted to scream at the temp agency that couldn’t clone correctly.
Bargaining
Often we will try to make a deal to take away the reality of their absence. “Can the deadline be extended until the first frost?”
Depression
The most difficult stage. You’re likely to whine to vendors about ‘the one’ out of the office and how burdened you are. “It’ll never get done…”
Acceptance
You realize work has to go on and take action. “Well, it has to get done. And I’m smart enough, I’m good enough, and dog-gone-it, people like me.” You call upon the resources needed to fill the void.
In summary, when others in the office take off, we go through a sort of grieving process until we accept that business must move on. Tapping into the experience of other employees, outside temporary / contract help, and business process outsourcing will help relieve the pain. Of course, OffSite Works is here to hold your hand.
