Denise Gore attended school on her computer even before the Internet, and has since set up a business, OffSite Works, which is a "virtual" corporation filling in the service needs of "actual" corporations. Her company now supplies services to over 100 local and national companies through her company's network of home-based independent contractors. Gore's background leading up to OffSite Works, is equally interesting and innovative.

"I received a degree in Media Arts from what is now called, The New School of Social Research, and all of the work was done on the computer in DOS - I never attended the actual school, which is in New York," says Gore.

Gore's background in computers and later the Internet have served her extremely well. Her business deals with outsourcing - one of the hottest areas of business online and offline.

Many corporations, large and small, experience cyclical workloads. OffSite Works addresses those temporary staffing/project needs by putting its own team on the job.

"We have more than 120 people working out of their own homes, their Small Office-Home Office (SOHO), on their own computers and using their own software. These are independent contractors, each of them having applied here and going through a very careful selection process," says Gore.

Gore say the individuals, who work for her virtual corporation, are often formed into teams to get project done on strict deadlines - required by such large organizations as Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) and Southwest Airlines, two of her many clients.

Denise Gore has utilized the SBA-sponsored services of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Small Business Resource Center (SBRC). "Early on, I talked to people from SCORE and SBDC, and was also called upon by SBA's Richard Castilon to speak at an SBA Workshop on Home-Based Businesses," says Gore. Indeed, Gore was extremely well-received at the SBA's Dollars and Sense program held in Franklin in 1999, where she explained how her business is both  home-based and also utilizes other home-based businesses - hence the "virtual corporation" concept.

According to Gore, OffSite Works has experienced success in today's marketplace due to a number of factors. First, the high level of employment means that corporations find it hard to hire the right people for what can be cyclical needs for such jobs as word processing, web design, data entry, and mailing support. "We've got quite a few clients who use our services for special mailing projects that no one else does," says Gore.

Gore sees the future as very bright in the booming field of outsourcing. It can be a difficult sell to new users of her outsourcing service, but, says Gore, "once they use it, they are hooked and will often go on a retainer account basis with us to ensure access to the same team or individual who has met their deadline." Gore is also very thorough and careful about her contractors - interviewing them at length in person and also checking their SOHO workspace. "We know how important it is to our customers to have their jobs done effectively and on time, so there are a lot of factors that we consider before choosing our contractors," she says.

"It's been good to have access to all the SBA resources like the Women's Resource Center, SCORE, SBDC, Small Business Resource Center, and also access to capital if we need it," says Gore.

OffSite Works changed its name from Office at Home Outsourcing to reflect a new company direction. The new web address is www.offsiteworks.com.
